Alpe d'Huez is one of the most important Alpine Ski resorts. First developed as a resort in the 1930's it is the central resort of the Grandes Rousses ski region, one of the best known ski resorts in France. The route to get here is also famous for being the challenging cycling climb made famous by the Tour De France. 
The mountains around Alpe d'Huez are a very popular winter ski and winter sports resort. Part of the reason for the popularity of Alpe d'Huez is its south facing position, which makes it one of the most reliably sunny of the resorts in the Alps.

Most of the Alpe d'Huez resort is between 1500 metres and 3300 metres above sea level with most of the skiing above 1900 metres altitude. There are more than 250 kilometres of ski-runs reached by 80 ski lifts, and the 133 pistes include 43 green, 34 blue, 40 red and 16 black runs (including Sarenne, which at 11 kilometers is among the longest ski runs in the world). There is a very important development planned for the next few years when the resort is due to be linked with the neighbouring ski resort of Les Deux Alpes by 2021. The views from the highest point, the Pic Blanc, are stunning and it is also here that you can access the most challenging of the ski runs. The more easy runs are lower down the mountain.

As with several of the most developed ski resorts here you will also find a snowpark, half-pipe and many other related snow activities including a luge and the chance for nighttime skiing. Hang-gliding, ice skating and driving on ice are also among the popular activities here.
